I-BEST (Integrated Basic Education & Skills Training) are certificate programs that combine Adult Basic Education and technical skills training using a team- teaching approach. Programs are 2-3 quarters in length, leading to high demand employment or transferring of credits to pathway certificate/degree programs.

Remember, I-BEST may be a great fit if any of these conditions apply…

The student is working on or has not attained a GED or High School diploma.
The student has never been in a college environment.
The student never felt like high school was the “right fit” for them.
The student is ESL level 6 or higher.
The student has a high school diploma or GED but feels they need a classroom with additional supports in place.
The student appreciates a team teaching approach that motivates them to do their best and opens doors to additional educational opportunities!

$5,000 grant will continue to build our Emergency Assistance Endowment

Lakewood, WA – The Muckleshoot Tribe has awarded a $5,000 gift to Clover Park Technical College Foundation. The money will be used to continue to build our Emergency Assistance Endowment.

“We are grateful for the Muckleshoot Tribe’s donation,” said Dr. Debbie Ranniger, Executive Director. “The money will be used to fund our emergency assistance endowment – a fund that helps students stay in school by offering critical and timely assistance.”

The Muckleshoot Indian Tribe has long understood the importance of being proactive in meeting the needs of its community. The Muckleshoot Charity Fund has placed high priority in awarding grants to organizations throughout the region that address the unique local and regional issues facing the population.
Most Muckleshoot Charity Fund awards range from $1,500 to $5,000, allowing many agencies to benefit from the funds available. Applications for larger awards are on an invitation only basis. Profits from the Muckleshoot Casino are the sole source of funding for the Muckleshoot Charity Fund grants.

CPTC Gives Back in Honor of MLK

Thank You! to the 12 wonderful students and community members who volunteered a combined 96 hours on Saturday with Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity at their Ainsworth Vista project site in south Tacoma. Habitat for Humanity partners with needy families to build and own decent, safe, and affordable housing. Our volunteers spent the day painting a house and clearing plots alongside several families receiving Habitat for Humanity homes. Although it was cold, the volunteers remained enthusiastic and committed, making it a very successful day indeed! You guys rock!

The next Service-Learning event occurs on Saturday, February 11th from 1:00-3:00 at Northwest Harvest in Kent. Northwest Harvest is the only non-profit food bank distributor in the state of Washington, with a network of over 325 food banks and meal programs. We will be helping to sort and package food that will be going to food banks to feed hungry people in the Seattle Metro area. We will be providing limited transportation to this event, so be sure to sign up soon!

$5,000 grant aids ABE/ESL students

Clover Park Technical College has received a $5,000 grant from the College Access Challenge Grant Program from the US Department of Education. The goal is to increase retention and student success.

The grant will focus on retention and transition efforts within the ABE/GED math classes during winter and spring quarters and will provide supplemental math instruction for Adult Basic Education/English as a Second Language (ABE/ESL) students. Student Peer Mentors will provide the instruction.

The peer mentors, who have already successfully completed the coursework, will attend math classes alongside their assigned students. The mentors will organize and lead weekly study sessions focused on the material covered in class.

Mentors will also meet periodically with faculty to provide feedback about the concepts in which students are struggling.

This supplemental instruction model is intended to focus on teaching students how to study, i.e. how to take notes, and how to collaborate with other students. The instruction model is designed to be a proactive intervention.

Study sessions are open to all students.

Two former CPTC public speaking students; CPTC's Vice President for Instruction, Lori Banaszak; and Tom Caswell, Project Manager for the Open Course Library at the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, are seen below with Dr. Phil Venditti. Olga Kholodyuk (Medical Assisting) and Tanya Shkarina (Pharmacy Technician) were the only students at the outset of a three-day Kick-Off for Phase 2 of the Open Course Library at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue. The two women shared their thoughts with a crowd of about 100 faculty, administrators, instructional designers, and other two-year college officials regarding their experiences with CMST&220.

Safety Tip of the Week

This week’s tip is about communication.

The most crucial element of communication is reporting suspicious circumstances. As near as I can tell we only receive reports on about half of the thefts on campus. The reporting rate is even lower for other suspicious activity based on the number of times I have heard people say that something has been going on for a period of time, and yet nobody in security had been notified. For example, I was just notified yesterdayabout something that has been going on for at least two or three months. I was able to handle the situation and resolve it within minutes of being notified, but in the meantime a student was emotionally shaken up by what she had seen and reported to an instructor. The instructor then witnessed the same suspicious behavior the next day and waited weeks to report it. Please report any and all suspicious activity when you become aware of it. You cannot usually know the full extent of the problem when you first see it. You should assume that what you have seen is usually just a portion of what has been going on. Our whole safety and security process is dormant unless suspicious circumstances get reported.

Other aspects of communication include keeping the campus community informed when suspicious activity has the potential to impact the community as a whole or asignificant part of it. I promise to do my best to accomplish such notice. The college administrators have been very supportive of the effort to disseminate information regarding safety and security issues. Finally, communication involves your ability toask questions. If you contact me with safety and security related questions, I will be happy to answer them. I will answer immediately when I can, and as quickly as possible when the answer is not on the tip of my tongue.

Our Peer Mentors currently have 2 service learning projects booked for this quarter!

Habitat for Humanity on Saturday, January 28^th8am-4:30pm

A day of service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. CPTC students will be building homes for families in need, working with Habitat for Humanity’s missionof providing housing for low income families.

There is a one hour orientation required for this event, which will be here on campus this Wednesday, January 25^th,from 3-4pm in the student center. (Room 302)

Specific projects and duties will be discussed at this orientation. Maps and directions will be given out at this time as well. Students can also make carpoolingarrangements at this time.

Students are encouraged to bring family and friends to participate in this event, volunteers must be over the age of 16 and are also required to attend theorientation.

We will be working at the Tillicum project site this coming Saturday, and will have various duties. All skill sets are helpful for this event. Please bringa lunch.

Northwest Harvest on Saturday, February 11^th1-3pm

Northwest Harvest provides nutritious food for hungry families throughout Washington state in a manner that respects their dignity. Northwest Harvest is theonly non-profit food distributor in Washington and has a network of 325 food banks. They provide 1.6 million meals per month to hungry families in our state.

We will be working in the food distribution warehouse in Kent from 1-3pm. We will be packaging food to be distributed to food banks throughout the state.

There will be transportation provided, so signing up in advance is strongly recommended!

Health SciencesFacility Update: The big news ofthe week is that the State has issued a notice to proceed for our HealthSciences Facility, and Jody Miller Construction will serve as our generalcontractor. You will see constructionactivity shortly, and Mike Anderson and I will have regular updates once theproject is fully up and running.

You will also be hearing from Indra Jain as he is our newHealth Sciences Facility project manager (his position is funded by statecapital funds set aside for project management). Indra has worked with the Collegebefore on the Building 14 emergency repairs and has a wealth of constructionmanagement experience. I look forward to introducing Indra to you at our next AllStaff Meeting.

70^thAnniversary Update: You may have noticed some eye-catching displays aroundcampus highlighting our 70^th Anniversary. These displays were collaborated between our70^th Anniversary Task Force and two very talented interiordesigners, Kim Ewing (senior student) and Bree Ellison (alumna). Together, Kim and Bree put together somewonderful historical displays in Buildings 16, 19, and 23. Please enjoy them as they will be up theentire year.

Culinary Arts ProgramExpansion: Minor renovations arebeing made to the former Floral classroom inside Building 23 and Buildings 31and 37 to prepare for the spring launch of delicious offerings made by thePastry Arts students. Again, Pastry Artsis a new certificate program within the Culinary Arts program.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King day of service the CPTC Peer Mentors are working with Habitat for Humanity on Saturday, January 28th in Tillicum. Volunteer sign in is from 8-8:30 am on site at 15407 Grant Ave SW in Tillicum.

Pierce County Colleges join to serve business through Invista Performance Solutions

Business Launch scheduled for Wednesday, January 18

Businesses or organizations that need training and education for their workers have a new resource in Pierce County. Invista Performance Solutions is the first collaboration among Pierce County colleges to serve the business community through a single point of contact.

Invista is responsible for centralized coordination of corporate education programs and services that advance businesses by increasing the skills of their workers. This partnership of colleges includes Bates Technical College, Clover Park Technical College, Pierce College District, and Tacoma Community College
The new entity streamlines the way businesses, non-profit organizations and government organizations access training and development services for their employees, according to Lisa Edwards, Global Solutions Officer for Invista.

“We’ve been talking about doing this for a long time,” she said. “Now businesses and organizations that need to develop their employees can make one call no matter where they’re located or what they need.”
Invista is based on a model used successfully by TCC’s Corporate Education Department. In the last year, TCC Corporate Education completed $1.7 million in training contracts with businesses in the region. Countywide, the colleges collectively delivered more than $2 million in training.

Invista is a member of Global Corporate College, a national network of leading colleges dedicated to serving businesses across their global footprint. “Invista offices are now headquartered on the campus of Clover Park Technical College, and the team will create and deliver training whenever and wherever it is needed,” Edwards said.

Invista will host a business launch on Jan. 18, 2012, at 11:30 a.m. at the Clover Park Technical College Conference Center, 4500 Steilacoom Blvd. SW, Lakewood. The event will include a networking lunch and keynote from Fortune 500 consultant and author Braden Kelley, who wrote Stoking Your Innovation Bonfire. The event will focus on increasing innovation and how to prepare your business to be more innovative.

Financial Aid Workshop, "College Goal Sunday" a Success

On Wednesday, Clover Park Technical College's Lisa Fortson, Financial Aid Assistant Director, and Wendy Joseph, Financial Aid Director, attended, "College Goal Sunday," at Mount Tahoma High School in the Tacoma School District.

At the event, they helped high school seniors and their parents complete the 2012-13 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The two hour event was very well attended and it gave Lisa and Wendy a chance to speak to prospective students about the programs at Clover Park Technical College.

Every year, various educational institutions around Washington State hold the, "College Goal Sunday" event on their campuses. It brings students, parents, the College Success Foundation, NELA Center for Student Success, and financial aid professionals from higher education institutions together to assist in the completion of the FAFSA for the upcoming academic year.

The FAFSA application is controlled by the Office of Federal Student Aid, an office of the U.S. Department of Education. The Federal Office ensures that all eligible individuals can benefit from federally funded financial assistance for education beyond high school.

Message from the President - important student success survey

Good morning and happy New Year,

Every January, New Year’s resolutions tend to make an appearance, and this year, CPTC’s is both important and worthwhile in serving students better and improving the College.

With the help of our Achieving the Dream (ATD) coaches and funding, we are resolving to become a data-driven institution. I believe the change will be transformational. Our desire is for more students to complete their education and realize their goals while allowing us to see ways in which we can improve in helping them do so.

To that end, the Achieving the Dream task force, led by Dr. Debbie Ranniger, has put together the first Achieving the Dream “Student Success” survey. Our goal is to have at least 300 students take this survey as soon as possible. It will take five minutes to complete.

Faculty, I would ask that you please encourage your students to take the survey this week. It can be done using any computer, tablet, or smart phone. For those with limited access to computers, the Library has offered the use of its two computer labs. You are encouraged to bring your entire class to the Library today, at any time before 7:00 p.m.

New Scholarship Video Contest from theWashBoard.org

TheWashBoard.org Scholarship Video Contest is a joint effort by theWashBoard.org, Scholarship Junkies, College Spark Washington, and the Northwest Education Loan Association (NELA) to encourage students to engage more actively in their own scholarship search.

Students are invited to create a 60 second video that answers the question Why are scholarships important to you?

Washington high school seniors, or current college students, who will enroll in college at least half-time beginning fall 2012, are eligible.

Aerospace liaison appointed, composites and material science programs take off

Clover Park Technical College is pleasedto announce the appointment of Andy Bird, Instructional Dean for Technology, Transportationand Science/Engineering as the new Aerospace Liaison.

Dean Bird’s new area of responsibilityincludes directing the more than $2.2 million in federal and stateaerospace grants recently awarded to the College. In addition to membership onseveral community committees dedicated to promoting the growth of the aerospacesector Dean Bird will manage the development of new grant opportunities as wellas new degree and certificate programs at the college, including a possible appliedbaccalaureate in this field.

Since 2008, Bird has led the College’sefforts to form a strong partnership with its aerospace industry partners,including Boeing. With the recent, steady growth of the aerospace industry,Clover Park is establishing itself as a recognized leader in aerospace careertraining programs. The College has been recognized for the quality of itsprogramming and the strength of its industry partnerships.

“In today’s economic times, everycollege is trying to identify a niche in which it can excel,” said LoriBanaszak, Vice President for Instruction. “Thanks to our industry partners, ourlong history in the Aviation field, the growth of the industry today, and ourwell-established South Hill Aviation Campus, we have positioned ourselves forgrowth. Andy Bird will do a great job leading this effort.”

Andy Bird holds a Bachelor of Sciencedegree in Biochemistry and a Master’s degree in Education, both from WesternWashington University. He has been with Clover Park Technical College since2007. In September, more than $2.2 million in grants were awarded toClover Park Technical College in support of the College’s aerospace-relatedtraining programs. The news is timely considering Boeing and its subcontractorsmay need up to 5,000 trained workers per year in the coming years.

Clover Park Technical Collegesuccessfully operates three aerospace training programs at our South HillCampus including: Aerospace Composite Technician, Aviation MaintenanceTechnician, and Professional Pilot.

The Lakewood Campus offers twoaerospace-related programs in Manufacturing Technologies and Material Science.

South Hill Campus Honor Society auction benefits Angel Flight West

On December 9, the AviationMaintenance Honor Society held a silent auction to benefit Angel Flight West.

The Honor Society was founded in March of this year to promote a higher level ofskill and professionalism in aviation maintenance.

Angel Flight West is a not-for-profit professional airlift organization that transports people from outlying areaswho require medical attention. Twenty of the 40 aviation club membersworked diligently on the auction, contributing their own time, money andmanpower to raise almost $2,400.

Approximately 30 people were inconstant attendance making bids on more than 50 donated items including tworound-trip tickets from Alaska Airlines and a media releaseflight jacket from the film, "Top Gun."

“This was the beginning,” said Ben Watson,current club president. “We hope to make the auction an annual event.”

Funds will support scholarships for students enrolled inautomotive programs

The Classical Glass Corvette Club hasawarded a $3,000 gift to Clover Park Technical College Foundation. The moneywill be used for automotive careers scholarships.

“We are grateful for this club’s commitment to students,especially around the holidays,” said Dr. Debbie Ranniger, Executive Director.“The money will be well spent on furthering the education of needy students.”

The Classical Glass Corvette Club first established anendowed scholarship for automotive students in 2007. To date, the club hasgiven $16,500 toward the endowment and another $3,500 in funds for annualscholarships.

Each year, the club raises these funds through their annual5-Star Classic Corvette show in August. The corvette show will be held atClover Park Technical College on August 11, 2012, and will also include otherclassic cars.

The ideal student is positive and motivated and would be in good standing with the college. This student would be in charge of Public Relations for ASG and would have a keen eye for detail and be an effective networker. I’d like to introduce you to Lucy Pick who is the new AmeriCorps VISTA service learning specialist on our campus. Through the coming year, Lucy will work to broaden awareness of service learning on our campus, further the learning students receive from serving those in need within their community, support faculty in utilizing service learning modules within their programs, and strengthen partnerships with community service organizations.

Lucy will be continuing the good work that John Ruiz began this past year during his term as an AmeriCorps VISTA service member. Her office is located in Building 10, Room 103, and you may reach her at extension #5790 or lucy.pick@cptc.edu. I’ve attached a picture of Lucy so you’ll know her when you see her.

Lucy has completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science from Western Oregon University with an emphasis in Anthropology. Her future plans include pursuit of a master’s degree that will prepare her for work in the field of student services.

Safety Tip of the Week: Winter driving

Winter driving presents challenges that we seldom face throughout the rest of the year. As a result your driving awareness may need a little refresher.

Never drive through standing water that is more than 2 or 3 inches deep, and if you must go through shallow water drive slowly. The most common problems are water getting into your brake lines and causing brakes to fail, and water getting into your intake manifold and ruining your engine. Less common problems are losing control in the puddle and not being able to avoid a collision, and driving into water that is deeper than you think and getting stuck.

Driving in inclement weather and on wet, icy roads is dangerous. Lower traction causes sliding, skidding, and inability to stop. The best solution is do not drive unless it is necessary. When it is necessary to drive, plan your route to consolidate trips, avoid dangerous hills, and use roads that are less congested. Try to avoid driving after dark when hazards are more difficult to see.

Carry a flashlight, flares, a blanket, drinking water, gloves, a warm hat and coat, an umbrella, a fully stocked first aid kit, boots or water resistant shoes, some extra gas, a roll of duct tape, and anything else you think you might need if you get stuck or broken down.

Make sure your car battery, cell phone battery, and your vehicle’s coolant levels are all properly charged.

Check basic items of your vehicle’s equipment to be sure they are in proper working order: windshield wiper blades, all lights, front and rear defrosters.

If you carry traction chains be sure they are the right size for your vehicle and that you know how to put them on. Remember that chains and studded tires can help you get moving, but do not help you stop your vehicle.

Never drive your car before the windows are fully de-iced. In bad weather and roadway conditions you need all of the visibility you can get.

Warming up your car is a great idea, but do not leave it unattended while warming up. Someone else might find it too good a deal to pass up.

Full year scholarship study abroad opportunity in Germany

In celebration of the International Education Week (November 14 – 18, 2011), International Programs Office is happy to inform you of some great study abroad opportunity in Germany for our students who are US citizens or permanent residents (green card holders) between 18 – 24 years of age.

The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) for Young Professionals is a reciprocal scholarship program sponsored by the U.S. Congress and the German Parliament (Bundestag) and is operated by Cultural Vistas in NY. Every year, 75 young Americans study & work for a year in Germany as well as 75 young Germans coming to the U.S. through the CBYX.

This fall, CPTC is one of the 59 participating colleges in 32 states that are hosting a German student through CBYX. The student is currently studying in the Graphic Technologies program under John Moyer and Darryl Owen and is doing her internship with ASG as a graphic designer. She is really enjoying her time in the US as well as at CPTC and hopes that our students, too, can study in Germany through CBYX.

Program Overview
The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) for Young Professionals is a full-year work-study fellowship program with a strong focus on cultural exchange. CBYX annually provides 75 young Americans with an understanding of everyday life, education, and professional training in Germany. The program begins in July and includes two months of intensive German language training in Germany (no prior German language knowledge required), four months of classroom instruction at a German university or college of applied sciences, and a five-month internship in each participant’s career field.

The CBYX for Young Professionals program is intended primarily for young adults in business, vocational, scientific, engineering, technical, and agricultural fields, though applicants from all fields are encouraged to apply. Participants actively participate in securing their internship positions with assistance from our partner organization in Germany, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, and are expected to cover incidental expenses as well as represent the U.S. diplomatically while abroad.

Program Highlights

* Full-year scholarship including round-trip transatlantic flight, university tuition, language training, living stipend, and program-related travel costs in Germany
* Health and accident insurance
* Two-months German language training in Germany
* Four months of study at a German university or university of applied sciences

Health sciences facility groundbreaking set for Wednesday afternoon

The ceremonial gold shovels will dig on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. as Clover Park Technical College celebrates the groundbreaking of its new health sciences facility located at the center of campus.

Highlights of the ceremony include remarks from President Walstrum, Senator Derek Kilmer, Chair of the Senate Capital Budget Committee, Veronica Marohn, Aide to Governor Gregoire, Charlie Earl, Executive Director of the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, and Matt Lane, Principal at McGranahan Architects.

Clover Park Technical College instructs the largest number of health care related programs within Pierce County. The College’s 11 health training programs have long since outgrown Building 14, built in 1981. Building 14 is approximately 22,000 square feet.

The new health sciences facility will be twice that size in order to accommodate the 2,166 full-time equivalent students whom the College currently educates in our health care training programs that vary from Surgical Technician to Registered Nurse. Students will have the opportunity to learn in a LEED silver, state of the art facility which includes laboratories that resemble current health care industry standards.

Health occupations are one of the few area industries that continue to see job openings even during economic downturns with vacancies at the highest of any occupation.

Health care careers represent one of the best pathways to prosperity for Pierce County residents. Since they also pay family level wages, they are equally critical to individuals seeking economic self-sufficiency.

How is the Health Sciences Facility funded?
Over six years ago, the College submitted a request for a new health sciences facility to house our growing health care training programs. This June, Clover Park Technical College was one of five community and technical colleges that received construction funding during the 2011-13 biennium. The Legislature funded this project solely out of the capital budget - no operating funds were used by the State to fund this project.

The College requested approximately $24 million during the 2011-13 biennium for construction. The Legislature cut our budget by 15 percent. The College is looking at a combined approach to bridge that gap without reducing the size of the Facility.

Why is this Facility necessary?
Clover Park Technical College instructs the largest number of health care related programs within Pierce County. The College’s 11 health training programs have long since outgrown Building 14, built in 1981. Building 14 is approximately 22,000 square feet.

The new health sciences facility will be twice that size in order to accommodate the 2,166 full-time equivalent students whom the College currently educates in our health care training programs that vary from Surgical Technician to Registered Nurse. Students will have the opportunity to learn in a LEED silver, state of the art facility which includes laboratories that resemble current health care industry standards.

Where will the Facility be located?
The Health Sciences Facility will be located in the now vacant lot between Buildings 16 and 23 directly to the south of Building 18.

What size will the Facility be?
55,562 square feet, with two floors.

When will the Facility begin construction?
November 28, 2011.

Ten.

How many computer laboratories?
Three.

How many general purpose laboratories?
Two general science labs in addition to the laboratory spaces dedicated to the career training programs previously mentioned.

What is unique about the Facility?
This is the College’s first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Certified Project. In order to meet the LEED standards, the College included features such as a patio/roof garden, herbal garden, landscaping using native plants, energy efficient lighting, HVAC, and plumbing features.

The program laboratory learning spaces will reflect current industry standards. These spaces will also include learning spaces that operate simulation mannequins (“SimMans”) and capture this instruction on a live feed that is shown to a larger student audience elsewhere in the Facility.

Two classrooms will include interactive television capability and wireless internet access will be available throughout the building.

The Facility will also have state-of-the-art security and remote lockdown capability in the event of an emergency.

Brianna Welch and Deidra Norgaard from Clover Park Technical College were the sole student participants in a day-long workshop earlier this week entitled "Leading from the Classroom." The workshop, held at the Bellevue offices of the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, was underwritten by the state's associations of two-year college presidents and trustees (WACTC and TACTC). Two-year college faculty members were nominated to take part in the workshop on the basis of their adopting innovative educational technology.

Deidra and Brianna sparked recognition at the workshop that students themselves should be involved in future statewide discussions of how technology can best be used to promote learning.

Now that the 2011-12 academic year is underway, I would like to bring you up to date on the multiple projects happening now across campus. Minor Repairs Across Campus:

Puget Sound Energy Gas Line Replacement: You have certainly seen the gas line replacement project throughout campus. The replacement of the gas line- required and completely funded by Puget Sound Energy – did cause some unnecessary disruption on campus. I will be registering the college’s concerns with Puget Sound Energy in a meeting next week. The good news is that the original gas line – parts of which were rusting – has been replaced minimizing an unnecessary risk to the campus.

KVTI 90.9 FM Tower Repairs: The radio tower at Lakes High School (which is our transmitter - so that our radio station can be heard in this region) and our Building 11 Microwave Tower is out of compliance with the Federal Communications Commission due to lack of upkeep. The College has repainted the Lakes High School Tower bringing it up to FCC regulation; the same treatment will be applied to the Building 11 Tower in the New Year. In addition, the neglected tower buildings at Lakes High School and Building 11 will be repaired. These repairs will allow the college to market tower space and generate local funding for the security and operations of the campus.

Invista Renovation: As you may recall, Invista is the contract training collaboration/partnership we now have with TCC, Pierce, and Bates. Invista will be housed on our campus in Building 19. The Operations Department is working on a minor renovation of Building 19, Rooms 205 and 207, and on the second floor. The Invista Performance Solutions contract training team, of which CPTC is a part, will have offices and meeting rooms located in this area.

Culinary Arts Program Expansion: Minor renovations are being made to the former floral classroom inside Building 23 and Buildings 31 and 37 to prepare for the January launch of the Pastry Arts certificate within the Culinary Arts program.

Major Construction Around the Corner

Building 15 Library Renovation: The Library is the College’s learning hub and we are currently leveraging a state capital allocation to ensure that our 30-year old facility is keeping pace with today’s student and faculty demands for information and literacy resources.

Planning for this renovation has taken place over the past three months and the architects are now developing the schematic design for the updated library. The final design scope for this project will be determined by the end of December.

Health Sciences Facility Groundbreaking: Thanks to the innovation and assistance from the health sciences faculty and administrative staff, we have worked in conjunction with our architects to update our building design in a manner that meets the 15 percent budget cut determined by the Legislature. We are still on track to have a contractor on board before Thanksgiving with construction beginning November 28. Estimated completion is June 2013. Shortly after construction begins we will have an estimated schedule for the demolition of Building 18. I will keep you posted when that date will occur.

Funds to be used to support scholarshipsfor students enrolled in health occupation programs

The WoodworthFamily Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant to

CloverPark Technical College. The money will be used for health careers scholarships.

“Affordingcollege in good times is difficult but now it is even more challenging for mostof our students,” said Lori Banaszak, Vice President of Instruction. “Thiswill provide wonderful, and very necessary, assistance to individuals enrolledin our healthcare programs.”

WhileClover Park’s tuition is among the lowest of any college in Washington, cuts toboth federal and state financial aid have added additional barriers to ourstudents, who demonstrate a level of financial need so precarious, that theyare often one utility bill or rent payment away from dropping out.

Thehealth careers scholarship will support economically disadvantaged studentsenrolled in an allied health or nursing program at Clover Park TechnicalCollege. In particular, the project will target needy individuals for whomtraining will lead to financial independence and long-term career growth. Ashealth occupations are one of the few area industries that continue to see jobopenings even during economic downturns, they represent one of the bestpathways to prosperity for Pierce County residents.

Acceleratingcollege progression, improving student success, synchronizing skills withemployer demands. This fall, CPTC welcomed Ramona Kohlmeier, the exchange student from St. Leon-Rot, Germany.

Ramona was selected to attend CPTC through the exchange program called Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX), a full-year reciprocal scholarship program sponsored by the U.S. Congress and German Parliament (Bundestag). CPTC is among the 59 participating host colleges in 32 states.

At CPTC, Ramona is studying in the Graphic Technologies program as well as working in the Associated Student Government (ASG) as a graphic designer as part of her internship. The event posters she designed for the ASG events are seen throughout our campuses.

“I was so excited when my first classes started for the graphic technologies course. My teacher John Moyer and Darryl Owens are really nice, helpful and so professional! I love to go to the advanced Photoshop and Layout classes. The projects we're doing there are quite difficult but very creative though. But the biggest challenge is still learning the bunch of technical ENGLISH words! But I can do it with the support of my classmates and teachers.

I also got a job as a graphic designer at the ASG which I'm very proud of and it is a great pleasure for me to work with other passionate and ambitious students! I love it there, we're a great team with a lot of really cool events!

I love the United States and especially this area. I enjoy the nature and the beauty of this landscape and I am glad to be part of Washington State and especially Clover Park Technical College!

I can really recommend the CBYX (Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange) program it it's worth it so much in different ways! Not only for your profession especially for your personality!! Spending a year abroad is a challenge and an experience that will last forever!”

CPTC international students in the Aviation Maintenance Technician program visited Lt. Governor Brad Owen in Olympia

A group of twenty CPTC international students in the Aviation Maintenance Technician program visited Lt. Governor Brad Owen in the State Capitol in Olympia along with other aviation students from Green River Community College.

Lt. Governor Owen is a WA state leader in promoting a trade partnership with China.

The students that visited Olympia from both colleges are from Civil Aviation Flight University of China (CAFUC), and CPTC’s partnership with CAFUC has started three years ago.

CPTC is providing the aviation mechanic training for the Chinese students whose country has a high demand for mechanics that are qualified to work on airplanes of foreign airlines. In recent years, there have been significant and rapid changes in civil aviation industry in China, and a demand for aircraft maintenance technicians is dramatically increasing. The FAA certificates, along with a degree from CPTC and the English skills, will significantly improve their chances of employment in China.

Open Course Library launch marks the beginning of the end of $200 textbooks

OLYMPIA, Wash. - On Monday during a telephone press conference, the Washington State Board for
Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) announced the launch of the Open Course Library, a collection of expertly developed educational materials for 42 of the state's highest-enrolled college courses. The materials - including textbooks, syllabi, activities, readings, assessments - cost $30 or less per student and are freely available online under an open license for use by the state's 34 public community and technical colleges, four-year colleges and universities, and anyone else worldwide. The project is set to expand to 81 courses by 2013.

Nationally recognized as a groundbreaking initiative, the Open Course Library aims to cut down textbook costs and improve course completion rates, helping more students earn the industry-recognized degrees and credentials they need to enter the workforce.

"For employers, it's about up-skilling the labor force," said Shaunta Hyde, State Board member and director of Global Aviation Policy for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "Evidence shows the burden of high college expenses can impact student success and degree completion. By offering high-quality, affordable resources, this initiative will ultimately lead to more college graduates with better job prospects."

According to an informal study by the Student Public Interest Research Groups (PIRGs), the Open Course Library could save students as much as $41.6 million on textbooks annually if adopted at all of Washington's community and technical colleges. The study also estimates that the 42 faculty course developers and their departments will save students $1.26 million by using the materials during the 2011-2012 school year, which alone exceeds the $1.18 million cost of creating the courses. "These savings will not only help Washington's students afford college, but clearly provide a tremendous return on the original investment," said Nicole Allen, Textbook Advocate for the Student PIRGs.

Each course was developed and peer reviewed by a team of instructors, instructional designers and librarians. Use of the course materials is optional, but many faculty and departments are already moving to adopt them.

This fall, the mathematics department at Green River Community College in Auburn, Wash. began using the Precalculus I course in place of an expensive, traditional textbook.

"I supported, and promoted, my division's adoption of the text by David Lippman and Melonie Rasmussen text primarily because it is, in my opinion, the best precalculus text available. Even those in the division who might disagree ranked it no lower than second," said Michael Kenyon, the department's coordinator. "And there's no contest on price. Our two main criteria for choosing textbooks are quality and price. The authors have simply written a better book at a much better price."

Lindsey Cassels, an Esthetics Sciences student at Clover Park Technical College in Lakewood, Wash. took a class using the Open Course Library's public speaking course materials. "It was the least expensive and most beneficial course I have taken, since the course materials cost us no more than $30 out of pocket." Like many students, Cassels spends more than $1,000 on textbooks annually, which she says can deprive our economy of better-educated workers by making it harder to afford college. "It is outrageous to pay $200 or more per textbook. In a four-quarter program, it's enough to make students drop out."

Funded by the Washington State Legislature and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Open Course Library joins the growing movement for open educational resources (OER), setting a strong example by requiring that all materials created through the program be openly licensed to the public to freely use,
adapt and distribute. Already, other initiatives are lining up to use and improve the materials, including
the Saylor Foundation, Project Kaleidoscope and the City of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

"It's not often that government gets this right," said Rep. Reuven Carlyle (D-Seattle) of Washington State's 36th District, a champion of the Open Course Library and OER. "This is a significant state investment in this era of massive budget cuts. We had little choice but to seize the opportunity of this crisis to challenge the status quo of the old-style cost model in both K-12 and higher education."

"Washington state is a national leader in developing innovative programs that help more students graduate from community and technical colleges," said Josh Jarrett, deputy director of Postsecondary Success at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. "This Open Course Library will ensure more students can afford to stay enrolled in college and graduate with a degree that will prepare them for the workforce."

Low-income students helped through special services grant at local technical colleges

Low income students at Bates and Clover Park Technical Colleges now have access to special services because of the Basic Food Employment and Training (BFET) grant from the Dept. of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Services (FNS).

To be eligible for the grant, students must receive basic food assistance (food stamps) through the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS).

The Basic Food Employment and Training grant provides funding for colleges to create special programs specifically designed to help food stamp-eligible students obtain the skills and education necessary to achieve self-sufficiency and help close the employment skills gap.

Students who qualify for the BFET program can receive funding assistance for education and skills training, and related support programs. At both colleges, students can obtain assistance to help pay for tuition, and get special help filing financial aid forms. Each student is assigned a program manager who acts as a mentor – helping to navigate the college experience. Future plans exist to develop additional support programs throughout the year.

The first BFET program began in 2005 and has since expanded steadily throughout the state’s community and technical college system. This is the first year Bates and Clover Park have been awarded the grant. Bates will receive $253,040 and Clover Park will receive $602,709 to fund the program.

Good Morning Colleagues,

Please join us in a roundtablediscussion to help our community become more resilient in times ofdisaster. During the discussion, a cross-section of citizens, emergencymanagement professionals, and representatives of business, industry, andnon-governmental organizations will identify gaps in emergency preparedness andactions we can take to be better prepared and more disaster resilient as acommunity and as a state. Roundtables are being held in nine locationsacross the State of Washington over the next several months.

Research and on-the-groundexperience after disasters shows that preparedness leads to increasedresiliency within organizations and a community’s ability to recover. Theheart of enhanced community resilience is the recognition that activities whichcan better prepare a community to deal with disastrous events are alsoactivities that increase a community’s daily functional capacity to meet theneeds of its citizens, thus contributing to a higher quality of life for thecommunity as a whole.

The Center of Excellence forHomeland Security at Pierce College, Washington State Emergency ManagementDivision and members of the State Community Preparedness Strategic PlanningWorkgroup are teaming up with the Pierce Department of Emergency Management,Region 5, and Clover Park Technical College to host this roundtable discussion.Issues and action agendas from each roundtable will serve as a foundation forupdating the statewide all-hazards emergency preparedness strategic plan andlocal emergency plans, and guide local emergency preparedness activities. Theroundtables are also great opportunities to learn about resources and networksthat can support and assist you in your community.

Redefine Education at CloverPark Technical College

Associated Student Government is sponsoring a campus wide pumpkin carving and display

It is that time of year again. Associated Student Government is sponsoring a campus wide pumpkin carving and display contest between classes and programs. ASG is providing pumpkins for groups of students who would like to represent their class or program in the contest. Your fellow students will judge on the overall display, and a selected panel of judges will judge on the carving on the pumpkin. So you can go for complexity or go all out with the display, and may even do both. We encourage you all to bring you “A” game.

After this you may pick up your pumpkin in the ASG office located in the student center (BLG. 23 Rm. 209) on the 26^th and 27^th. Clover Park Technical College wins marketing awards at regional conference

Clover Park Technical College won six Medallion awards at the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR) District Conference late last week.

Trustee Mary Moss, Vice President Amy Goings, Webmaster Sean O'Connor, Outreach Coordinator Janet Holm, part-time graphic designer Rommel Villalobos, and College Relations Director Shawn Jennison were in attendance.

The NCMPR District 7 Medallion Awards recognize outstanding achievement in communications at community and technical colleges in District 7. It's the only regional competition of its kind that honors excellence exclusively among marketing and PR professionals at two-year colleges. District 7 includes Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Yukon Territory.

Dreams on the Wing – CPTC’s Aerospace Center

TheAerospace Center at the South Hill campus of Clover Park Technical College(CPTC) is an architect’s dream and the playing field of students who willemerge one day with careers in the aviation industry. Built in 2001, instructorswere involved in designing the building, and it’s obvious that it was a happycollaboration of need, function, and design.

Thefacility’s front door has an overhang resembling a plane’s landing gear doors,another part looks like the nose of an airplane, while the trusses that supportthe roof resemble the ribs of a wing. Inside, one is struck by afloor-to-ceiling stained glass piece called “Circumnavigating the Century.”

InstructorMike Potter and retired CPTC counselor Linda Wight took me on a tour, beginningwith a 100-yard hallway lit in blue lights, the same blue that signifies a taxiway.In this hall, classes such as physics, weight and balance, mathematics, electricity,and materials and processing are taught; and for each subject, the hands-ontakes place across the hall in the lab.

Westep into the flight department where students will enter a cockpit fuselageand operate a computer-simulated cockpit, complete with control wheel, rudderpedals, throttles, radios, and instruments to help future pilots learn thenuances of taking off, staying aloft, and landing.

Then,there is the airframe room, filled with tools, BIG tools, and vents used forwelding, plus many technical system mock-ups.

Mikeexplains, “We do hydraulics, sheet metal, landing gear, position and warning,wheels, tires, and brakes – that’s just a few of the 17 subjects taught here.”

Weenter the helicopter and turbine engine lab.

“Whoa!Big ol’ helicopter,” I say. The room seems filled by a massive helicopter and islined with all manner of supplies and parts.

“Hm– little helicopter,” Mike replies. “Here’s where they take ’em apart and put’em back together.”

Wego from there to another very large area that holds a crane with a plane enginehoisted into the air.

“Studentstake possession of a four-cylinder airplane engine like this one at thebeginning of the course,” Mike says. “They completely disassemble it andmeasure everything and spec everything, then reassemble it, and then it’s movedto bays outside where the test cell is chained to the ground. The engine isthen tested to see how well the repairs went.”

Linda adds, “People who ask for a tourand take a look at our program have usually done their homework. When they talkto employers, they recognize that this is the best program, which is creating ahigh demand for the training provided by CPTC.”

As we continue our tour, it occurs tome that the many interconnected aspects of the entire program are pretty mindboggling. Take, for instance, the parts and tool rooms. Since students couldn’tpossibly afford to buy all of the special tools necessary to work on airplanes,the tool room has loads of them. It follows that nuts, bolts, rivets, and moreare located in the parts room. And the cleaning room holds the solvents,machinery, and fine glass beads the size of sand that clean engine parts by blastingoff the corrosion, paint, etc. Not one, but two battery charging rooms arenecessary because if the fumes of lead acid and nickel cadmium happen to mixtogether, it makes the batteries deteriorate, so they must be charged inseparate rooms.

Eventually, we find ourselves onhelicopter row in a giant hanger. A couple of retired Bell Cobra helicopterssit in the bay. Parked next to them are two retired military Hughes TH55trainers. Two Vietnam-era “Hueys” stand nearby, along with a couple of Bell JetRangers, probably one of the most produced helicopters in the world. Next tothat is a French-built Aerospecial A-Star, with gleaming paint, the choice of mostTV reporters. Two of the helicopters fly, and the rest are for maintenancetraining. Hard not to be impressed by the fact that students working with thesecrafts will have such a variety of hands-on experience.

“Becausewe specialize in helicopters, we’ve obtained a lot of helicopter equipment,most donated by the military,” Mike says.

We enter the maintenance hangar, roomyenough for quite a few airplanes. There’s a crane, 5-ton capacity, located onthe ceiling. Mike pushes a button, and just like an awning, the hangar doorcranks open, with eight strong metal lines that draw the door up off theground, until we’re looking outside at the edge of the 5,000-foot runway.

Tenairplanes, their tail sections featuring a picture of an airplane flying by Mt.Rainier and “Training the Best in the Great Northwest,” are parked and ready tobe commanded by those with a passion for flying who are enrolled in theProfessional Pilot Program. Eight other planes parked nearby are used in theAircraft Maintenance Program. A short distance away is a helicopter landingpad. From the sky comes the smooth hum of a Cessna climbing into the bright bluebeyond.

Now is the time the aerospace industry needs trained new employees, both behind the scenes, repairing, maintaining, performing nondestructive testing, and working with composites, as well as behind the wheel, traversing the skies.

Average salaries can vary greatly due to company, location, industry, experinece, and benefits, but anyone interested in learning what average salary ranges in the aerospace and aviation fields are can check www.careeronestop.org of the US Department of Labor.

Clover Park Technical College is known for its excellence as training grounds for those who are an answer to aviation’s call. From the moment students step through the door of the South Hill campus, their dreams of a career in a hungry aerospace job market are securely on the wing until they touch down to make that soft landing and taxi on toward a future with their certificate or degree in hand.

Governor Gregoirerecently earmarked a portion of Workforce Investment Act funding for CPTC inthe form of Individual Training Accounts (ITAs) that will provide qualifiedstudents with a full scholarship to complete the two-quarter compositecertificate. Veterans transitioning from military to the civilian workforce areparticularly targeted, and a new cohort will begin winter quarter, 2012. TheCollege’s partner, Workforce Central, will make additional ITAs available forqualified students for fall and spring.

CPTC partner,Boeing, played a key role in the development of a new Material Science Program whichbegan this fall. Students can now pursue an AAS-T degree in NondestructiveTesting, an AAS-T degree in Composites and/or a certificate in Eddy CurrentTesting. Additional certificates in Ultrasonic Testing, Radiographic Testing,and Magnetic Particle/Liquid Penetrant Testing will follow in subsequentquarters.

Clover Park Technical College was recently the recipient of twoDepartment of Labor grants intended to increase capacity in the College’saerospace-related programming. The first grant provides $20 million overthree years to the Air Washington Consortium, a group of 14 Washington collegesand aerospace organizations. The second provides $19.7 million over three yearsto be distributed to ten community and technical colleges throughout thecountry, with Anne Arundel Community College of Maryland serving as lead. CPTCwill be focusing these resources on increasing opportunities for students incomposites, aviation maintenance, and advanced manufacturing.

PierceCounty’s federally funded adult literacy providers are moving students furtherand faster on the path to skilled jobs. Employers are also partnering with adult literacy providers to helptheir current employees gain the skills that lead to job advancement.

Holiday House 2011

What is Holiday House?
Holiday House is an annual volunteer activity, which distributes food, gift cards, and holiday gifts to eligible Clover Park Technical College (CPTC) students.

Who is Holiday House?
Holiday House is an informal committee of CPTC staff and other volunteers who raise funds and coordinate distribution activities.

Why Holiday House?
Holiday House exists to provide December holiday assistance in the form of food and/or gifts for CPTC students who demonstrate need.

Who is eligible to receive Holiday House assistance?
Available resources limit the distribution of Holiday House assistance to current students enrolled in a two quarters or more CPTC program/course (main or South Hill campuses). Students must carry a load of 12 credits or more, receive some type of aid through the CPTC Financial Aid Office, self-identify as being in need of holiday assistance, and must meet the established criteria (see application).

How does it work?
Attached to this memo are Holiday House Application and Holiday House Adoption Forms. Applications should be distributed by faculty and staff to any student who self-identifies as being in need of assistance during the December holidays. Adoption forms should be completed by an individual, instructional program, or department that would like to adopt a student for Holiday House assistance.

All forms should be returned to Cindy Overton/Kelley Meeusen in Building 16, Room 101, no later than Friday, November 4, at 5:00 p.m. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Students who meet the criteria for assistance will be matched to program or department sponsors, and the program or department will be provided information specific to their adoptee. Those adopting may choose to collect funds to purchase food, a food gift card, and/or gifts. All other students who meet the criteria for assistance will be assisted through the general Holiday House program.

Age-appropriate gifts, food, and food gift cards will be available to students at the Holiday House pick-up station (Building 23, Room 214) on Thursday, December 8, from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m.

What’s the timeline?
Holiday House activities will be coordinated according to the following timeline:

October 14, 2011 - Holiday House information and forms distributed to all campus faculty and staff.

November 4, 2011 - Deadline for Assistance Applications and Adoption Forms to be returned to Cindy Overton/Kelley Meeusen in Building 16, Room 101.

November 21, 2011 - Students will be notified whether or not they have been adopted.

November 21, 2011 - Individuals, instructional programs, and departments will be notified about the family they have adopted.

December 8, 2011 - Identified students pick up food/toy packages from the1:00-6:00 p.m.

What can I do?
You can help in a variety of ways:

Donate a new, unwrapped toy or wrapping paper. The collection box is located in Building 17, Student Records area.
Encourage your program or department to adopt a family. We anticipate the need to be greater this year due to the economy. If you belong to a large department or program and your group is able to donate many gifts, you may consider, instead, donating to more than one family. Simply complete the adoption form attached and return by the deadline, November 4.
Donate funds to the CPTC Foundation in the name of Holiday House.
Help staff the Holiday House pick-up station on December 8, 2011. Call Phil Terry at extension 5572 to volunteer.
