Student Success Team - Embedded Coach Update

Hello Campus Community Member,

I wanted to take a moment to provide you with an update on one of our Achieving the Dream strategies.  The strategy that Joyce Loveday and I have been leading is an Embedded Coaching intervention. ATD is built upon 3 premises: 1) Student Success 2) Equity/Access and 3) Creating a Culture of Evidence.

When building the Embedded Coach strategy we were able to address all three of these targets. The question that we asked was, where are the students having problems with progression and are students of color having particular challenges? When we analyzed the data it showed that English 82 is a course that students of color were having problems with progression. Anecdotal data and student questionnaires provided additional data about student needs as far as support. This examination of data and lots of discussion led to the creation of a combined ENG 82 and College Success course. Though our data pointed us to an intervention that targeted students of color, all interventions that have been and are being created are things that will help all of our students.

We have launched Phase 1 of this course for the winter quarter and Sally Gove and Annemarie Solbrack are the instructors for this class. There are currently 10 students registered and out of the 10, seven are students of color. Once students complete this 7-credit class, they will have continued coaching with Annemarie as their Counselor until they are ready for College level English.

With our first phase launched, the work team will be coming back together to develop the second phase that will include an expansion to additional ENG 82 sections and/or embedded coaches within professional technical programs.

These are truly exciting times as we continue to work on things to increase student success and if you have any interest in participating in our team, please let me know.  We would be delighted to add more faculty members to our team. Please contact me if I can answer any questions for you.
