BAKERSFIELD, Calif., Aug.23 -- California State University Bakersfield issued the following press release:
On Sept.6, 2012 at Seven Oaks Country Club, the prestigious John Brock
Community Service Award will be presented to Jon Van Boening, President
and Chief Executive Officer of Bakersfield Memorial Hospital
(BMH).Included in this event is the award of four John Brock
Scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each to highly deserving students
in the School of Business and Public Administration (BPA) at California
State University, Bakersfield.The scholarships are funded from the
event's proceeds through CSUB's John Brock Endowment.

Dean, Dr.John Emery, states, "Four recipients have been identified whose
academic achievements qualify them for this financial award.These
students have demonstrated not only academic achievement, but the
leadership and community service for which the John Brock Scholarships
were established.Their future success in private and public sectors will
be important to Bakersfield and Kern County."
This year's recipients are:
* Grant Garcia - Grant transferred to CSUB from Bakersfield College and
is a senior majoring in business marketing.He credits working eight
years in the family business, Gamestor, for priceless business knowledge
and life lessons.Grant maintains a 3.8 GPA.He was elected vice
president of Bakersfield Business Leadership Academy and is a member of
Beta Gamma Sigma, the honor society for students in internationally
accredited business schools.Grant's volunteer work includes YMCA events,
Bakersfield College's food pantry, and projects at BC that enabled
improvements in the business building.He will be graduating from CSUB in
Spring 2013, the first in his family to obtain a bachelor's
degree.After college, Grant plans to work for a major sales and
marketing firm.
* Sarabeth Grawe - Sarabeth is a senior
majoring in Business Administration.Sarabeth grew up in the state of
Washington with her father, an attorney, and mother, a secretary.After
high school, she attended Clover Park Technical College
for a Private Pilot Certificate and Instrument Rating.During this
period, she met her husband who was in the military.They have a
two-year-old boy.After moving to California, Sarah decided to become an
accountant and enrolled at CSUB.Sarabeth works full time in addition to
attending CSUB.Upon graduation, she plans to become a CPA to advance her
career.
* Harjot Kaur - At the age of five, Harjot moved
with her family from India to the United States in search of a better
life.After settling in Bakersfield, Harjot attended Planz Elementary,
McKee Elementary, Greenfield Junior High, and South High School.She
graduated from Bakersfield College with an associate's degree in
Business Administration prior to enrolling at CSUB.She is pursuing the
Business Administration degree with a concentration in Human
Resources.She is President of the Society of Human Resource Management
(SHRM) student club.She plans to work with local businesses and
contribute to Bakersfield being a great place for individuals to live,
work, and learn.
* Gregory C.Malone - Gregory is a junior
who recently transferred to CSUB from Porterville College where he
earned his associate's degree in Business Administration with a 4.0
GPA.While at Porterville College, Gregory was presented with a Medal of
Distinction in Political Science and named Scholar of the Year by the
Academic Senate.He was a member of Phi Theta Kappa.He is continuing his
education at CSUB in pursuit of a bachelors' degree in Business
Administration and plans to go into financial accounting and marketing.
