Clover Park Team at Pierce County Heart Walk 2010

The morning began chilly and overcast, but, thankfully, dry. An enthusiastic crowd of approximately 1,200 walkers, including seven of the team from Clover Park Technical College, gathered on Saturday, October 2, in downtown Tacoma to walk and raise money for the American Heart Association through its annual Heart Walk.

Left to right, President John and Penny Walstrum, Veronica and Ralph Duron, Anne Mauch (back) and Dianne Bunnell (front). Not photographed, Amy Smith.

I could say it was a grueling march uphill and down (or maybe uphill both ways), where we peeled off our jackets and wind breakers as we passed the mile markers, feet sore by the end. But I will simply say it was humbling to be among so many who’d survived and whose lives had been touched by such devastation as can be wreaked by heart disease in its various forms.

Many of us have been touched by friends or loved ones who’ve suffered from strokes, heart attacks, or other forms of heart disease. Some of those who walked from downtown to Ruston Way and back were doing it for those loved ones and friends, others were simply supporting a good cause.

Out of all of the worthy causes to support, why choose the American Heart Association? “All of the men on my father’s side of the family were impacted tremendously by cardiovascular disease,” President Walstrum stated. “It was a natural that I would take part in the walk.” And thus, our Team Captain put out the word to the college. CPTC participants in the fundraising include: Veronica and Ralph Duron, Vicki Harter, Anne Mauch, Dawn Schuler, Amy Smith, John and Penny Walstrum, and yours truly.

If you haven’t contributed, but wanted to, you still have one week (until October 12) to get your checks to any of the team members listed above. Our thanks to you for taking part in this heartfelt endeavor that helps so many.
